1. What is the difference between “retirement or independent” apartments & “assisted living”?
Retirement or independent apartments are not licensed by the Department of Health & Senior Services. This offers more flexibility on a daily basis, however, bathing, dressing, meal preparation, dog walking service, etc., are available for an additional charge.
Assisted living is designed for the person whose medications must be monitored and administered, all following the physician’s orders. Three meals per day, snacks, assistance with bathing & dressing, and medication distribution are included in the daily charge.
2. How do “retirement” apartments differ from living in a “condo for those over 55”?
The difference is in the service package. While the condos may have “community rooms”, retirement communities have full time staff to provide a variety of activities 7 days a week…so there is someone to plan and carry out all the events and pay the entertainers. Our community has a person 24 hours a day to answer any questions & solve problems…whether it’s a clogged toilet, a burned out light bulb, or not feeling well. Our staff will either solve the problem or get the help needed to solve the problem. You don’t have to rely on your neighbors or family…you’re independent!
3. Is it easier to sell a house with the senior still living in it?
Most will agree that the answer is “no”. Keeping a house in “show style” is very stressful for anyone, let alone a senior with years of accumulated items.
4. Is there access to Health Care?
Yes. The growing St Charles, MO area is serviced by St. Joseph Hospital and Barnes St. Peters Hospital. Thus, many specialists have opened offices in the area. In our Community, we have a Physician’s Office staffed with Gerontologists from St. Louis University Hospital so they understand your needs at this time of your life. We have a Podiatrist here monthly. Lab & x-ray services can come right to your apartment so you avoid waiting rooms! Three pharmacies deliver to our center. Our transportation department will make your doctor’s appointments and schedule your transportation.
Prevention is helpful to good health so we have a Personal Trainer, daily exercise classes, a Massage Therapist, music & art programs, plus the key to good health…socialization! Our dining room can accommodate vegetarian preferences and sugar-free items are available if necessary. Access to a dietician is offered by NHC HealthCare next door.
When our residents get older, they may eventually need assistance with their medications. We do have 25 apartments licensed by the Department of Health & Senior Services as “Assisted Living Apartments.” While living in these apartments, we can store & monitor resident’s medications & consult with their physicians to keep them as healthy as possible.
5. Can I bring my pet?
Probably! Dogs must live on ground floors so they can enter & exit through the patio door. Cats must be indoor and can live on any floor. All pets must offer proof of current vaccinations.
What a Week...Thank you!
I was in several outside meetings and did not get to participate in most of the Olympic Games, however, I heard plenty of talk about them. Samantha, how in the world can an Administrator take care of your regular duties and constantly go from one game after another? Thanks for being so visible. I especially thank you for helping my friend Paul when he did not know how to go get his food. You were there. Donna, a thousand thanks would not be enough for you and your great staff. You constantly give them credit for the extra work, yet I know that you put in several hours getting ready for the games, then making sure plans were carried out and making changes that were needed. Again, thank you for what you did for Paul the night of the "Bluegrass Band." I did not think it was possible. You had him laughing more in a few minutes than I have seen for a long time.
Forever Grateful we Found this Haven
When mom died a few years ago, dad quickly decided he did not want to stay in the house. We began searching for an independent living venue that would work for him. We visited a couple and quickly knew they weren't the one. When we went to Lake St. Charles, we immediately felt the difference. The people who work here are very kind, gracious and helpful. That includes all departments, from housekeeping to maintenance to the dining room personnel, etc. Whenever we have had difficulty, of any kind, we have received help. Dad has poor eyesight. Sometimes he gets his t.v. remote out of whack from hitting the wrong buttons and maintenance will come and straighten it out for him without any attitude or shaming. When we have had phone trouble, they check that out for him. And the list goes on. Recently, dad had a fall and broke his hip. Lake St. Charles got the ambulance to take him to the hospital. In walking through the process of hospitalization, surgery, rehab, and acclimating back to his independent living apartment, Lake St. Charles was proactive on dad's behalf. Any difficulty that came up, they helped us find a solution. They offer services that helped dad get back on his own and continue to live independently. The peace of mind I have, with dad living at Lake St. Charles, is priceless. I know that if a need arises, i can call and get whatever help we need. I feel that dad is well cared for and looked after by people who genuinely care. We will be forever grateful that we found this haven.
